The custom of covering the head among women of Islam has existed for a very long time. Is it just religion? It would be too easy, there must be something else. Let's figure out what the salt is and why Muslim women wear headscarves.

Religion and Society

Undoubtedly, religion plays a large role in Islamic society. According to the Qur'an, the holy book of Muslims, a woman should behave modestly and not show off her beauty exclusively for her husband.

The progressive part of the Muslim society has long understood that this postulate, to put it mildly, does not correspond to current realities. However, those who decide to break the tradition are immediately condemned by more conservative people around them: parents and husbands. The pressure is so great that most women do not even try to change something.

beauty

It would seem, what beauty can be if a woman is wrapped from head to toe in a shapeless robe? But this is our, western, view. In fact, Muslims simply have a different understanding of the meaning of this word. Beauty for them is something quite tangible and material, which has its own value. If a woman just shows her beauty to everyone, her value in the eyes of men decreases.

In their understanding, in order to see the beauty of a woman, you need to make an effort: to marry her and provide for her. At the same time, such an attitude, in their opinion, increases the self-esteem and dignity of women. If a Muslim woman wears a headscarf, this makes her less accessible, more valuable and respected.

The opinion of women

Well, in countries professing Islam, traditions and influence of society are strong. This is clear. What happens if a woman changes society? Why do Muslim women wear headscarves even in Europe? Here opinions were divided.

Some of the married ladies explain the wearing of the hijab or the burqa in the same way as their fellow countrywomen: the influence of religion, strong traditions, the opinion of society, the attitude of the husband. Others see this as a way of self-identification, unwillingness to forget their culture.

More interesting thoughts are expressed by unmarried girls who, despite the absence of any pressure, continue to wear a headscarf. They find it humiliating the very fact that their appearance can be the subject of assessment or discussion. It does not matter whether they are men or women, no one has the right to judge whether they are beautiful or not, young Muslim women believe.

A second argument that is often heard from young people is that they wear a headscarf to be judged by their intelligence and abilities, not by their physical characteristics. How do you like that?
