US doctors have warned of an increase in acute flaccid myelitis, a rare disease that affects the nervous system in children and resembles polio. In 2018, 127 cases were registered, including already confirmed diagnoses. This is reported by Science Alert.
Despite the efforts of specialists who conduct laboratory and other tests, the cause of most cases remains unclear, according to representatives of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An increase in the number of cases has been observed since 2014, with peaks in August and September. The disease is predicted to continue to spread. Today it is registered in 22 states, and the sick are children under 18 and younger. The average age of patients is four years.
To date, there are no specific drugs for the treatment of acute flaccid myelitis, and there are no vaccines. The disease affects the back of the brain and can lead to lifelong paralysis. Its pathogens are still unknown, doctors consider viruses, toxins and genetic disorders as possible causes.
