This is exactly the conclusion that the jury of the international competition Mars City Design 2017 came to, following which the first place was awarded to the team of developers and designers from MIT, who presented their vision of the Martian city of the future. Redwood Forest - the so-called design concept of an alien city - is a hemisphere connected by tunnels, inside which future Martian colonists can live and work.
The hemispheres from the inside will resemble tree crowns, since it is proposed to create them from a branched structure covered from above with an inflatable membrane shell. The design of each dome may be different, so they can be adapted not only for work, but also for a comfortable existence. Inside, it will be possible to arrange public spaces, gardens or even bodies of water.
They also did not forget to pay attention to water: thanks to the solar energy collected by the domes, water will be directed into the porous coating of the domes, providing residents with protection from radiation and overheating. The heated water can be used to irrigate plants and the needs of residents.
In the next five years, Elon Musk is going to send the first spaceships to Mars, so it cannot be ruled out that such a project for a Martian city will be implemented much faster than it might seem.
