Robots will begin replacing teachers in schools in the next 10 years as part of a revolution in personalized learning, predicts a leading education expert.

Anthony Saldon, Vice Chancellor of the University of Buckingham, believes that intelligent machines that can adapt to individual learning styles will soon make traditional learning redundant.

A former professor at Wellington College says Silicon Valley is currently developing computer programs that can read a student's brain and facial expressions in order to optimize communication.

The new era of automated learning will make it unnecessary to group children into age groups, as a personalized robot approach will make learning possible at an individual pace, rather than with the class.

“It will make Eton and Wellington-level education possible for everyone,” says Saldon.

Yet he warns that the new technology requires careful implementation to avoid "infantilizing" both students and teachers.

In the robotic learning process, teachers will take on the role of a facilitator, monitoring the progress of each student, leading extracurricular activities and providing personal support.

The effectiveness of automated learning also means that only 30 percent of school time will be spent in the classroom.

Experts believe that automated machine learning will primarily be applicable to mathematics and science, but algorithms for the humanities will soon appear.
