An uncanny cloud of steam has caused illness in retirees at a Colorado commercial recreation center.

Local TV station 9NEWS reports that half a dozen elderly people suddenly fell ill while standing at the entrance to a commercial recreation center. Elderly citizens were about to board the bus to go to the event and listen to the children singing Christmas carols.

The incident caused confusion among the police. 70-year-old grandmother named Mary, who spoke about the incident, asked not to show her face and not give her last name for security reasons.

Here's what she said.

It was terrible! It's just awful,”said Mary. “As soon as I inhaled this vapor, I immediately began to choke, cough, vomit.”

The Commercial City Center is in an industrial area, but police say that only houses and restaurants are in the immediate vicinity of the recreation center. Thus, there is no obvious source for the vapor cloud.

The paramedics continue to treat Mary and others.

“I still feel a burning sensation in my nose, a headache, a slight dizziness,” says Mary.

Mary may have to go to hospital if her condition does not improve. Police Chief Dennis Luna says the vapor cloud had gone by the time emergency services arrived.

“It's very unusual and not often that unknown couples have poisoned people,” Luna said. "We want to know what caused the poisoning and get information for the people who are suffering and to prosecute the perpetrator."

Mary says the unknown is the worst.

“It's scary,” she said. "I want to know what happened, I hope and pray that it doesn't happen to anyone else."
