There are many amazing castles on the territory of the Transcarpathian region, and there are even more mystical stories about them.

Almost every ancient castle that has survived to this day has its own history, shrouded in legends. There is no “decent” castle without its own ghosts, mysterious and fascinating stories. For centuries, people have been retelling the legends of brutal massacres, love stories, mystical coincidences and incredible facts. There are many such castles on the territory of the Transcarpathian region.

Palanok Castle, Mukachevo

One of the legends of this castle is about the creation of a deep well, which is located under the Old Tower. They say that the subjects of Prince Koryatovich hammered the rock for several years in a row, and there was no water in the well. The prince promised a bag of gold to whoever finally finds water. A short, dark-skinned man appeared in front of the prince, asking if he really would receive a reward for the water found at the rock. Having received an affirmative answer, the man immediately jumped into the well. There was a rumble, stones flew from the depths of the well, a sharp sulfur smell appeared in the air. Then everything calmed down, and from the depths the same man appeared who said that from now on there would be water in the well. Having promised to return in three days, he ordered that the promised bag of gold be prepared by that time.

Although Koryatovich was a prince, he did not have a bag of gold. Therefore, he ordered to put several gold coins in a small bag and give the devil (everyone believed that it was him), because there was no clear condition regarding the size of the bag.

The little man got terribly angry when he received such a "reward". He began to swear, and then jumped into the well again. They say that to this day, from the bottom of the well, you can sometimes hear an incomprehensible hum. Then the devil is raging, and he does not dare to get out of the well, because he is ashamed that he so easily allowed people to deceive himself.

Uzhgorod castle. According to legend, in the 17th century the Hungarian knight Druget was the owner of the Uzhgorod castle. He had a young, very beautiful daughter.

Polish tycoon is planning to get a castle

To find out how to do this, he came up with a cunning plan: he dressed as an itinerant knight and came to the castle for reconnaissance. In the evenings, the traveler told the hosts about his adventures in distant lands. Listening to these stories, Druget's daughter fell in love with him. And when she found out who her lover was, she could not overcome love and talked about how much military force there is in the castle and how you can take it. The riddle was this: there was a secret passage, the secret of which was known only to the family members of the owner.

Druget learned about the deceit and the dishonest guest was executed. The knight did not forgive his daughter either: for treason, the father ordered her to be immured alive in the fortress wall. Since then, a ghost has been walking around the castle every night: this girl will never find her beloved. With the first roosters, the vision disappears, so that the next day at midnight they will go out again in search.

Nevitsky castle

Legends related to the Bad Maiden tell about this castle. So people called the Turkish sorceress, who allegedly built the Nevitsky castle, ordering milk and human blood to be mixed with lime, and she chopped off everyone who did not worship her. However, there was a young man in the surrounding villages who promised to free the people from the Bad Maiden, on condition that he became king. The owner, for whom Ivan worked, only laughed: of course, you will become a king - as iron blooms, you will become. With these words, the owner stuck a stick into the ground - and it immediately sprouted lush roses.

Realizing this sign, Ivan went to Uzhgorod, where the aristocrats were just choosing the king. Since they could not come to an agreement, they decided to throw up a golden crown - on whose head it falls, he will be the king. However, the golden crown fell on Ivan's head. The aristocrats did not want to recognize the peasant as the king, so they threw the crown three more times - and each time it lay on Ivan's head. When the young man was crowned, he fulfilled his promise and executed the Bad Maiden.

Templar Castle, Middle

Serednyansky castle could not withstand all its owners and those historical collisions that over the seven centuries fell in its fate. The ruins of the fortress could tell, for example, about a beautiful and very cunning young lady: she, they say, once lived here. But even the trick did not save the girl from the killer father, who immured people in the castle dungeons.

Transcarpathians to this day tell that some underground passages connected as many as four castles of Transcarpathia - Uzhgorod, Nevitsky, Serednyansky and Mukachevsky.

Khust castle

The castle was burned down by lightning, which ended up in a powder store. The castle's past is associated with Count Dracula himself. According to Khust legends, he was a knight, disfigured by scars in battles and nicknamed Drago (from the Romanian "demon"). He, having grown rich on military achievements, bought out the Khust castle, and according to other versions, his descendant was the Transylvanian Count Dracula.

They say that the castle stands on the bones of the dead builders. As for the ghosts, their genealogy in the Khust castle dates back to the time of the Mongol conquest of Batu. One of his governors accidentally killed his own son. And his sister committed suicide from grief, since then her ghost wanders the castle.

Castle Saint Miklos, Chinadievo

About the castle of St. Miklos they say that a walled up human skeleton was found within its walls. In the Middle Ages, people thought that a person walled up in the castle walls becomes the patron-guardian of the fortress, so they did not consider it a murder.

But much more romantic history of the castle is connected with lovers - Count Imre Tekeli and Princess Ilona Zrini. It was here that they first met and fell in love with each other. At least that's what legends say, thanks to which the fortress was dubbed "the castle of love".

Vyshkovsky castle

This castle, which no longer exists, was located in Vyshkovo (a village near Khust, known for a unique architectural monument - a wooden Reformed church). It had a certain common feature with the fortresses of Khust, Vinogradov and Korolev. It was a "salt" castle - designed to protect the extraction of salt in Transcarpathia. The legends of the castle are associated with twelve robbers who once occupied the mountain, where the Vishkivska fortress stood.

The robbers mocked the peasants, and a daughter was stolen from one owner and taken to the castle. She cursed and prayed and asked. And suddenly such a storm covered the castle that destroyed it. Only ruins remained from the fortress.
