In 2012, the number of Canadians claiming to have observed unidentified flying objects was the largest on record.
It has nearly doubled from previous years, CBC News reports. This is the data of the annual report compiled by Chris Rutkowski, a writer and ufologist who has been conducting this research since 1989.
In 2012, residents of Canada saw UFOs 1981 times. The previous record was recorded in 2008 - only 1004 times. A record number of UFOs have been seen in the skies of almost every province in Canada, except for Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island.
As Chris Rutkowski says, people report seeing objects of various shapes - cubes and fireballs floating in the sky, flying saucers of a more traditional egg-shaped shape.
Some time ago, government agencies decided to abandon tracking UFOs and checking eyewitness reports. The main collectors of information for the Rutkowski report were public associations interested in the topic. Perhaps their activity was one of the reasons why the number of received testimonies so dramatically increased.

At the same time, the researcher notes, the number of non-explainable cases of UFO sightings is small. According to Rutkowski, last year there were about 7.5% of such incidents. “Oddly enough, only about 15% of the cases were fully interpreted, so there is a clear need to take a closer look at each piece of evidence,” says Rutkowski.
