Do you know what caused the Atlantis myth to appear? The legend appeared as a result of a volcanic eruption that destroyed the island of Strongill. The consequences of the volcanic disaster were dire. Civilization has completely disappeared from the face of the Earth, which has managed to achieve incredible success in sciences and crafts, navigation, architecture and art.

Life on a volcano is a huge risk

Strongill Island translated into Russian means "Round". In the 17th century BC, the French-born geologist F. Fouquet called it "Pompey in the Aegean Sea." The eruption of a local volcano, without any exaggeration, can be considered a grand catastrophe in the history of mankind. This event marked the end of a once prosperous civilization.

Plato wrote that Atlantis plunged into the depths of the sea and completely disappeared in just one day, as a result of an unprecedented earthquake and flood. The tragedy on the island "Round" developed approximately in the same scenario. The locals are used to powerful earthquakes, but one day a volcano on the island simply exploded. The caldera that arose as a result of the explosion was in the form of a broken ring, and its diameter reached 10 kilometers.

Strongilla has become an archipelago of five land areas of various sizes. Today they are covered with ash and frozen lava. The largest of the formations, called Santorini, has an area of 76 sq. km. The rest of the islands are less significant and with a smaller area.

It turns out that the Santorini archipelago is the fragments of Strongill, in the center of which there is a volcano. Jacques Yves Cousteau believed that these are particles of the world famous sunken Atlantis. The researcher's conviction is based on the works of the ancient Greeks Plato and Solon, as well as on his own scientific research.

Tsunami washes away entire cities

The explosion of a volcano on Strongilla Island gave rise to a tsunami unprecedented in those places. A huge wave about 100 meters high reached the island of Crete, the cities on the coast were completely destroyed. Volcanic ash covered an area of about 210 thousand km2, livestock and crops were destroyed.

The most powerful earthquakes ended the catastrophe, a great civilization perished. The tsunami swept along the coast of Greece, causing damage to northern Egypt. Everyone in the Mediterranean region suffered.

In 2007, during excavations on the coast of Crete, a real porridge of various representatives of the marine fauna, pebbles, pottery and building materials was discovered. This was further evidence that the cause of the destruction of civilization was the tsunami that caused the explosion of the volcano. Later, American researchers carried out a deep analysis of the wood of individual conifers, and came to the conclusion that the disaster began in 1628 and ended in 1626 BC. e.
