About a day before her death, Smirnova decided to confess her sins. However, there was no priest in the village to whom she could pour out her soul. And Natalia Smirnova decided to “confess to the icon”.
At her request, all her relatives left the hut so as not to interfere with the sacrament of confession. Only one of the relatives, named Valentina, hesitated to leave the house, spinning in the kitchen. From her words, we know this story.
When Valentina heard exactly what she was confessing, an ancient old woman in the next room froze with her mouth open, and no forces could, I think, drive her out of the hut before the end of the confession. For Natalia Smirnova, lying on her deathbed, spoke in a full voice about things, it would seem, wild and impossible.
During the war, when her husband was at the front, an unusual incident happened in Natalia's life. One night she woke up, as if from a jolt, and saw a man, short and fat, crawling out of the Russian stove.
The fat man rushed to Smirnova, grabbed her in an armful and, like a sack of potatoes, threw her over his shoulder. And then he ran somewhere.
- It became dark around, - Natalia Smirnova confessed, - the wind whistled in my ears. It was a long and dark corridor. And "he" keeps running over him. He ran into some kind of underground and threw me to the floor. He lifted his skirt up and let's rape …
At that moment, the peasant woman lost consciousness. When she came to, she was again within the walls of her own hut.

The “Smirnova case” can be compared with a very similar event described by the folklorist I. Karnaukhova. The story was recorded at the beginning of the 30s of our century on the White Sea with the words of Maria Ragozina. Karnaukhova notes that Maria “was aware of all the local news,” she “had a tenacious memory,” and she “did not have a tendency to fantasize,” “she presented facts dryly,” and was satisfied with that.
