Scientists have uncovered the mystery of the Blood Falls in Antarctica. The unusual color of the water in it is due to the fact that the reservoir is connected to a salt source. This was the lead by researchers led by researchers at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.
Blood Falls is a famous body of water, the contents of which are rich in iron. Scientists have established that it has a connection with a large source of salt water, presumably falling under the mainland's glaciers for more than 1 million years. This connection has remained a mystery since 1911, when Blood Falls was discovered by geologist Griffith Taylor.
To detect a connection with the source, the researchers used a special radar that detected high salt content in the waters of Blood Falls. Water acquires a red tint when the iron contained in it comes into contact with air.
Scientists consider an equally important discovery that the connection between the waterfall and the source indicates the ability of water to maintain a liquid state of aggregation inside a cold glacier. Before that, it was believed that this is impossible.
