Somewhere in the Mojave Desert in the El Paso area, there is a strange tunnel that goes through 2,087 meters of solid rock. Strangely enough, this tunnel does not lead to anything special.
It exists for one reason only: One eccentric man named William Henry "Donkey" Schmidt (also known as "the mole man") really wanted a tunnel to appear there.
Although he spent 32 years of his life single-handedly tunneling through solid rock, he never told anyone about it. When asked about his strange undertaking, he said that it was "the shortest path." Where exactly - no one knows.
Most of the people living in the area believe that this person was simply crazy. He lived alone, and had a reputation as a curmudgeon, as he patched his clothes with burlap, and mended his boots with tin from cans. Many times he was badly injured as a result of his own explosions, as he was too thrifty to use a long fuse.
There was a time when the locals called him "Freak Schmidt", and later he himself took the name "Burro" (English donkey). To this day, the Donkey-Schmidt Tunnel is a big mystery, and it continues to pique the curiosity of those who decide to visit it. Everyone who has been there is ready to vouch that Schmidt knew what he was doing. He did not have any special knowledge for such work, but the accuracy of his work is beyond doubt. However, the question remains: why would anyone even dig a tunnel to nowhere?

When a person fanatically performs some seemingly meaningless task, this naturally raises a huge number of questions. When Schmidt was digging, there were rumors of rich ore deposits and a gold mine that he allegedly mined in the tunnel.
But none of these versions has ever been confirmed. Several people explored the lands of Schmidt and his work, but alas, he did not leave a single record of the reasons for his actions.
