The recently redesigned Google Earth service allowed users to see how Area 51 has changed over the past three decades. The app, known as Google Timelapse, uses thousands of satellite photographs to create an annual survey of the Earth from 1984 to the present.

While a fascinating prospect has emerged to trace the evolution of humanity on our planet, there is one place that is catching the attention of conspiracy theorists: the notorious "Area 51".

Area 51 is one of the most secret places in the world. The gated facility, located in the state of Nevada, has been the focus of many ufologists since the late 1970s, who claim that the base is being secretly developed using alien technology.

Now Timelapse Google has provided an opportunity for everyone to assess how the territory of this mysterious base has increased over the past 32 years.

The military complex, stretching from a dry lake in the northeast to a mountain range in the west, is guarded from the prying eyes of the public by a large army of armed guards.

Beginning with the first photograph taken in 1984, Timelapse shows how the base was gradually expanded and refined by the American military.

The photographs show that the US government is placing great emphasis on construction in the northern part of the base. And military engineers are improving the western part. The original runways are much wider and longer.

Area 51 has always been a magnet for those who believe the US government knows a lot more about UFOs than it is willing to disclose to the public,”said Nigel Watson, author of a guide for UFO researchers.

Many of the former scientists who worked at the base said that Area 51 stores and studies extraterrestrial spacecraft and technology. However, anyone using Google's Timelapse to expect to spot a UFO or even a tiny alien that accidentally falls into the camera's field of view will be disappointed. Although some interesting details can still be seen.

It was almost impossible to find photographs of the base. Even the most daring photographers who went there were detained by armed guards long before the perimeter.

“It's only in the last few years that the US government has recognized the existence of Area 51, so it's amazing that they allowed Google to publish these photos,” Nigel said. "We understand that they hide a lot more and will keep tight control over these secrets for as long as possible."
