There are many unique cases in the history of medicine, especially that part of it that deals with the study of the brain. One of them is a person who, as a result of an operation on the brain, is "stuck" in time, practically losing the ability to memorize new information.

The name of this man is Henry Gustav Mollison, and from early childhood he suffered from epilepsy, in the most severe form. Ey even had to move to his parents, because he stopped coping not only with his work, but also with everyday problems.

In 1953, Gustav decided to undergo surgery, which was performed by the neurosurgeon William Beecher. This specialist, desperate to help Gustav with the usual methods, proposed to carry out a complex operation, removing the temporal lobes of the brain and part of the hippocampus. After the operation, the epileptic seizures did not recur, however, another problem arose, much more serious.

The fact is that Gustav Molison stopped memorizing new facts, only old information remained in his head, and he remembered the events of 10-20 years ago very well. It is interesting that he was able to master the game on a musical instrument, as well as learn how to play one computer game. True, he did not remember at all when and how he learned this.

Sitting down to play the same computer game, he could not remember what it was all about, but he played it without any problems - it seemed that memorization was almost at the level of motor skills.

Unfortunately, all these problems let Gustav into the habit of life - he had to live with his parents further, since he only knew how to do simple cleaning and go to the store. At the end of his life, in 2008, he thought that Dwight D. Eisenhower was the president of the United States, and that he was 40-something years old (although in fact he was already about 80 years old).
