The first British astronaut, Dr. Helen Sharman, is sure that we are not alone in the universe.

The first British woman to ever visit the Mir space station, Sharman took off aboard the Soyuz spacecraft as part of the British Juno project on May 18, 1991, and spent about 8 days in space.

The competition for this position was fierce and it was chosen from over 13,000 candidates.

“Belief in myself and attitude towards what can be done has changed my life,” she said.

“I checked the boxes on all of these profiles, but I thought they wouldn’t choose me, so I won’t bother (apply). By the time I got home, I realized that if I don't apply, they won't be able to choose me."

Now, more than 28 years after her short stint in space, the memory of the voyage is as strong as it ever was.

“There is no greater beauty than looking at the Earth from above,” she said.

- I will never forget the first time I saw her from orbit.

Speaking of extraterrestrial life, Sharman is still confident that we are not alone.

- Aliens exist, and this is an indisputable fact. There are so many billions of stars in the universe that all kinds of life must be there.

- Will they, like you and me, consist of carbon and nitrogen? Or maybe not.

“It is quite possible that they are here among us right now, and we simply cannot see them.
