If you ask the residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region what is the most mystical place in these parts, then many will point you to Lake Maloe Plotovo, located in the Vorotynsky district. Numerous legends circulate about this reservoir, and all of them relate to a mysterious and very dangerous island, which from time to time appears in the center of the lake, invariably attracting people to itself.
The first of these myths dates back to the seventeenth century. Even then, the locals considered Maloye Plotovo a cursed place and bypassed it. They did not fish, do laundry or swim here. Nevertheless, one peasant, who did not really believe in all this devilry, decided to go to the lake one time and see what caused such superstitions.
Once on the shore, he saw in the middle of the reservoir a small island covered with grass, bushes and trees. One might think that he had always stood here. The daredevil undressed and swam there, and soon returned, receiving terrible injuries. Having hardly reached his village, he told his fellow villagers that something unimaginable was happening on the lake island: heart-rending screams and screams are heard, shadows rush in different directions, incomprehensible lights sparkle.
Less than a day later, the peasant died of mysterious injuries he received on the cursed island. The villagers cautiously approached the lake to personally contemplate the terrible place, but there was no island on the water.
The second victim of the mysterious island
Another equally famous incident occurred less than a century ago, in 1939. Kochurova, an employee of the Mikhailovsky fishing industry enterprise, went to the island to pick strawberries, and sailed back with the same severe injuries as the legendary peasant. Before his death, he also talked about the devilry taking place on this mystical piece of land in Maly Plotovo. The brigadier of the fishing industry enterprise even wrote a letter to his brother, in which he spoke in detail about what had happened - about a mysterious island that does not appear in front of everyone and disappears in the same incomprehensible way. This message was made public after experts in the field of paranormal phenomena began to study the lake.
