Guglielmo Marconi
A radio engineer and entrepreneur from Italy, who, along with the Russian scientist A. S. Popov, one of the first inventors of radio, was convinced that alien civilizations not only exist, but are also ready to come into contact with humanity.
At the very beginning of his research, Marconi assured that he was going to communicate with aliens, whatever they may be, using radio signals. And in the 20s of the last century, the scientist amazed everyone with the statement that he actually managed to receive a signal from Mars! Discussions of the so-called Red Planet were really popular at that time - many believed that since Mars is older than Earth, then civilization there is more developed. But, despite this, the public did not believe in the fixation of Marconi's signal. Sarcastic articles about his alleged success were published in the media, and one of the main skeptics in this matter was Nikola Tesla, who also tried to contact other planets.

Nikola Tesla
The Serbian inventor in the field of electrical and radio engineering claimed to have picked up a signal from space: Mars was their source, and this event happened 20 years earlier than the unconfirmed success of Guglielmo Marconi. Unlike his colleague from Italy, Tesla recorded repetitive signals regularly and was confident that he was receiving messages from people living on Mars. The repetition of the signals to the scientist from Serbia did not help: he could not prove their reliability. However, some researchers believed him, making only one amendment - they thought that Tesla had contacted Jupiter.
In 1976, at an auction, the American writer and biographer Tim Schwartz purchased Nikola Tesla's diary, from which it became known that the Serbian scientist had invented a unique radio antenna that allowed him to eavesdrop on the dialogues of representatives of different alien civilizations. However, later the diary from Schwartz was confiscated by the special services, and the data on Tesla's extraterrestrial studies were no longer made public.
Stephen Hawking
Hawking, a theoretical physicist and cosmologist from England, believed not only in the existence of aliens, but also in their potential danger. Even if the inhabitants of other planets send a signal to earthlings, according to Hawking, one should not answer it. The scientist explained such a cautious position by the fact that the inhabitants of the Earth are not familiar with the nature of their neighbors in the Universe - it is possible that such ignorance will provoke a conflict. Moreover, aliens can infect earthlings with diseases for which we have no cure and which our immunity cannot resist.
However, such convictions did not prevent Hawking in 2015 from accepting an offer from the Russian oligarch Yuri Milner and joining the Breakthrough Listen project. The program, for which $ 100 million was allocated, is dedicated to radio listening to more than a million stars in order to search for signals from extraterrestrial civilizations. Two years after the start, the project team even published interim results - they managed to record 11 unusual signals, but the likelihood of their connection with alien civilizations is extremely small. The activities of the organization continued after the death of Stephen Hawking (the researcher died on March 14, 2018).
Mikhail Vasin and Alexander Shcherbakov
Despite the lack of direct evidence of the existence of aliens, the hypotheses of the previously mentioned researchers still found their supporters. But the theory of Mikhail Vasin and Alexander Shcherbakov, members of the USSR Academy of Sciences, seemed absurd even to those who do not consider themselves to be specialists. Scientists have stated that the Moon is an artificially created object. Moreover, they suggested that under the outer "armor" layer there is either a filled with mechanisms, or a habitable cavity. According to Vasin and Shcherbakov, the Moon was created by alien beings, after which the so-called satellite was delivered to Earth's orbit. The main argument of the scientists was that the craters of the Moon, given their diameter, are not deep enough. The researchers set out their full assumptions in the work "The moon is the creation of the mind",thanks to which Vasin and Shcherbakov gained popularity, but not like-minded people.
Over time, the theory of the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations gained even more admirers, including among researchers. This means that more rational arguments in favor of the theory have appeared.
