After a 35-year-old woman gave birth to her son Xander, she dried her placenta and made pills from it. Defending her position on this matter, she insisted that "there is nothing unnatural in this and it has nothing to do with magical rituals."

“This is a very civilized thing that can help women cope with depression and fatigue. I have never felt depressed or sad after the baby was born, so I strongly recommend that any pregnant woman eat my placenta,”she said.

The placenta, which is adjacent to the lining of the uterus during pregnancy, contains a large amount of vitamins. It is especially rich in vitamin B6, which is known to help fight depression.

The woman experienced postpartum depression after giving birth to her first child. She now works for an organization that helps women use their placenta as a treatment for postpartum depression. When her second child was born, a boy weighing just over three kilograms, she tore a small piece from the placenta and immediately put it on her cheek as soon as the placenta came out, so that nutrients and hormones would return to the blood.

“It sounds disgusting, but research has convinced me that it will help me beat postpartum depression,” she says.

An hour later, she swallowed the bite that was in her mouth, and then her husband mashed the placenta to the new mom.

The effect was amazing, the woman says: “I felt just amazing. I had a tremendous amount of energy. I didn’t feel tired or insecure like after my daughter was born.”

The woman cut the rest of the placenta into small pieces and put it in the freezer.

“Many people think this is not normal, but most mammals eat the placenta after birth. Drying the placenta and making capsules out of it is like taking vitamins,”she added.

Across the Western world, more and more women are breaking social taboos and making capsules, cocktails and tinctures from their placenta. The procedure is safe and absolutely natural, the woman is sure.

“So you just put back into your body what was already there and helped you to bear and give birth to a beautiful and healthy baby,” she says.
