At the end of the 18th century, two departments of the Senate were the first to return to the Kremlin, and in 1918, the Bolshevik government and Lenin's cabinet were located in the Senate building. In 1929, the monasteries were blown up and a building was erected in their place, which housed the secretariat of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (until 1991, meetings of the chambers of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR were held there).
