For ten years now, a Poltergeist Study Group has been operating at the Russian Geographical Society in St. Petersburg. To its head, academician of the International Academy of Informatics, Communications and Management, full member of the Geographical Society, candidate of technical sciences Boris MARCHENKO, we asked the question:
- The ghost is opaque, takes the form of a person or an animal, suddenly appears, and then disappears without a trace. Its appearance is accompanied by various sounds, it can even say something to the observer. It happens that a ghost is invisible, but it appears on film. If you touch the ghost, it will disappear, the hand will feel cold and emptiness, sometimes a slight resistance, an electrical discharge. Ghosts are vague, transparent, and silent. They can be dead ships - remember the Flying Dutchman - and even fighting armies. For hundreds of years, they appear in the same place and move along the same route. In St. Petersburg, for example, similar anomalous phenomena were recorded in the Gatchina Palace, in Monplaisir, in the palace of Emperor Peter III, in the Cavalry Corps in Oranienbaum.
Is there any material evidence of the existence of ghosts?
“They practically do not leave traces, but in their presence the temperature drops by 6-9 degrees. British scientists believe that ghosts draw energy from their environment. In addition, they have an extremely negative effect on the human psyche, causing a terrible, otherworldly horror. However, all this was known to people back in the Middle Ages.
Why do we know so little about these anomalies?
- Ghosts are a very unfavorable subject for research, since the time and place of their appearance is unpredictable. It is easier with ghosts - they have been appearing in the same place for centuries, but there are still no special devices for studying them.
Have you personally encountered ghosts?
- In the fall of 1994 we received a signal that something strange was going on in the Gatchina Palace of Emperor Paul I. The guards complained that at night someone walked around the palace, knocking ladies' heels, rustling crinolines. Then terrible things began to happen. Someone grabbed the caretaker by the throat. The policeman on duty saw the locked door open by itself, and out of fear pulled out a pistol … We agreed with the palace administration and on the evening of October 21 arrived in Gatchina. At 20.00 they took up duty. At 2 o'clock in the morning, my partner and I walked through the Chinese Gallery to the Great Hall and were dumbfounded - right in front of us was a huge figure of dense white fog, from which emanated an eerie cold. Then a voice rang out. With a terrible laugh, the phantom asked: “Well, is it scary? Do you want to come to us? " This suggestion angered me:“It's too early for us to see you. But we can order a memorial service. " The ghost, after a pause, replied: "Only necessarily in the church of the eighteenth century." I did not rule out that we were the victim of a hallucination provoked by the play of light and shadow, but I still went to St. Nicholas Cathedral, consecrated in 1760. The priest agreed to serve a panikhida for the souls of the Gatchina Palace. The local police did not bother the local police again.

Do you believe you were dealing with spirits?
- Hard to say. The Christian Church considers ghosts to be the souls of the dead, who for some reason lingered on Earth. On the other hand, there are cases when ghosts took the form of living people. I still prefer to take firm scientific positions. Based on the concept of a multidimensional universe, we can assume that intelligent beings live in parallel worlds, which penetrate our world in the form of ghosts. As for the ghosts, this is something like a movie that experimenters from a parallel world play in front of people. However, ghosts can also be a record of real events that took place in the past, imprinted in the energy-informational field.
