The world has not yet solved the problem of creating such a model.

Scientists from the Kabardino-Balkarian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (KBSC RAS) are developing a simulation model of the thought process for the functioning of robots. The problem of creating such a model has not yet been solved in the world, and the center may become the first to cope with this task, Acting Chairman of the Kabardino-Balkarian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences Zalimkhan Nagoev told TASS.

Since 2019, two laboratories have been operating in the scientific center, in one of them they are engaged in the creation of artificial intelligence, robotics, and in the other, molecular selection in biotechnology.

“We took advantage of the opportunities opened by the national project“Science”, and created two laboratories in which we are implementing the academic plan on the approved topics, which were agreed by the RAS,” said the agency's interlocutor.

Thinking core

In the laboratory "Neurocognitive Autonomous Intelligent Systems", on the basis of previously completed developments of KBSC RAS, fundamental research is carried out aimed at creating a simulation model of the thinking process, modeling reasoning, since this model is the key to creating an intelligent control system for robots.

According to Nagoev, in the applied aspect, scientists are preparing for the boom in mass robotics predicted by everyone. “We see automation filling many niches. Where a person can transfer his functionality to machines, he does it. Not only will there be robots on the assembly line, of which there are already millions, robots will enter our lives - maids, janitors, waiters, retailers,”the agency's source said.

At the same time, Nagoev explained that modern robots are still not smart enough to massively shift tasks to them. “For example, bringing a cup of coffee from the kitchen to a table in a cafe, taking it, pouring it neatly, placing it correctly is a very difficult task from a scientific point of view, there are still a lot of unsolved problems. Our laboratory is aimed at solving these problems,”he said.

Actions similar to human, the robot will be able to imitate if it has a core of intelligent decision-making, explained the acting. the head of the center. “The originality lies in the fact that we are working on creating a core of intelligent decision-making, modeling reasoning, which works on the principles of our proposed new hypothesis about the functioning of the brain. In general, in science, this is an open question for now. A person has a certain nucleus, which, using the principles of neuroplasticity of the nervous tissue, is tuned to solve any problems, this is our task - we are working on creating such a nucleus, consisting of models of neurons that interact with each other, - explained the agency's interlocutor … According to him, so far none of the scientists have managed to solve this problem.

One of the main methods of work of the scientific center in the KBR is simulation. In their work, scientists use a virtual reality interface, augmented reality sensors, that is, special glasses.

“You put on your glasses and dive into the 'brain' of the robot. Neurons are studied separately, but how their work is linked to psychological phenomena, how we think, feel, how it works directly - all this is not given in direct observation, so the only way is simulation. We make a computer model in the laboratory, which visualizes in 3D program models of brain neurons and connections between them, which are formed in the process of performing functional tasks by the robot,”he said.

Robot retailer

One of the developments of the center's laboratory is a robot-retailer, which was presented at the international forum for innovative development "Open Innovations" at the stand of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. After Skolkovo, scientists are modernizing the finger drive system in order to bring their work as close as possible to natural. The retailer robot consists of a torso, a head, hands and a mobile platform - a chassis that allows you to move on flat surfaces and overcome obstacles 5 cm high. center.

“We are now making the brush of this robot, several solutions on it are now being patented by us. There are about 30 actuators on the wrist, and each of them must be given a corresponding impulse at each moment of time. Our work on modeling artificial intelligence will help solve the tasks that we set for this and other robots,”said the agency's interlocutor.

When developing the hand, scientists used the concept of an anthropometric hand, which copies a human hand. This is the uniqueness of the robot, says Nagoev. According to him, no one in the world currently offers a mobile robot with two "full-fledged" arms, the force-moment and kinematic characteristics of which correspond to the hand of a person who would also solve the problems of placement in hypermarkets. “The hand drives are not located on the arm itself, but on the body of the robot and the fingers are driven by cables, which makes the hand light. The main difference from the functional point of view from others is that we 'pretend' to arrange the goods, while no one else in the world does this,”he explained.

Scientists from the KBR are confident that one robot they have created will replace five people in performance. “We now have engines only at 10% power on, because we are working off, then we will add power to achieve the given performance, while maintaining complete safety in cooperation and interaction with humans while solving functional tasks,” he said … At the same time, Nagoev noted that much depends on funding. In particular, if there is an investment program, then in two years the center is ready to make a full-fledged product that can be delivered to stores, and it will already be fully operational, the agency's interlocutor explained, adding that a prototype with financial support from developments may appear in a year.

“The first thing we need to do is a full-fledged prototype so that it demonstrates all the declared functions - it should already independently navigate in the store, should go around people, recognize all products, be able to manipulate all objects, boxes, bottles, clothes. We have to teach him, this is a very difficult task that has not yet been solved in the world,”the agency's source explained.

The level of retailers' interest in the robot is already quite high, says Nagoev, and some companies are already ready to pre-order it. At the same time, he noted that the employees of the research center are also developing a robot capable of harvesting and replacing five people when working in greenhouses. “The tasks may be different, but if a basic core of artificial intelligence is created, it will adjust itself to solve them. The "greenhouse" robot will be almost the same, we will simply reprogram, "the agency's interlocutor concluded.
