Most of the Karelian reservoirs were formed during the Ice Age, but Lake Suavjärvi is a completely different story.

It is located fifty kilometers from Medvezhyegorsk and twenty kilometers from the village of Padany. The SAO / NASA astrophysical data site states that the Suavjärvi crater was formed during the early Proterozoic impact on the Fennoscandian shield. At the moment, this object is considered the oldest meteorite crater on the planet.

For 2.4 million years of existence, it has lost its even outlines and became similar to neighboring lakes, but geologists were able to prove its true meteoric origin.

When a large stellar body strikes the earth's solid, materials experience the strongest pressure, and monstrous energy is released. It is in such unique conditions that the rarest impact diamonds of incredible hardness are formed. A tool made from this material is capable of cutting even ordinary diamonds excavated in standard kimberlite pipes. The presence of the impact diamond 100% confirms the meteorite origin of the giant funnel.

In 1982, geologists found a concentration of impact diamonds in the area of the Karelian crater Suavjärvi, confirming the controversial hypothesis of unearthly origin. The uniqueness of the situation about the presence of ordinary diamond deposits here, which creates the preconditions for the possible emergence of a diamond mining industry in this area. A casual tourist will most likely not be able to pick up the pockets of precious stones on the shores of Suavjärvi, but these places are excellent for outdoor activities and fishing.
