There have been two legendary lands in history, known since ancient times. Greek historians have mentioned Atlantis and Hyperborea - two states with an unprecedentedly high level of development. At the same time, Hyperborea was located in the north, probably on the territory of modern Russia. Many believe that it was from Hyperborea that modern human civilization began. Recently, interest in the mysterious lands has been higher than ever. Let's try to find out what this mysterious land is.
Wonderland, known since ancient times
Hyperborea and Atlantis are two states of supermen. They were inhabited by higher beings with mystical abilities. They possessed telekinesis and were immortal, and their technology was thousands of years ahead of time. So at least the ancient Greeks believed, in particular the father of history Herodotus. But there was one major difference between Atlantis and Hyperborea. Atlantis was destroyed by an unknown cataclysm - it was swallowed by sea waves. But Hyperborea lived when ancient scientists wrote about it.
Translated Hyperborea - the country located beyond Boreas - the north wind. According to Greek legends, it was from there that the mother of the sun god Apollo, Phoebus, came. And the god himself, when he grew up, repeatedly visited the homeland of his ancestors.
In the 7th century BC, a Greek named Aristeus tried to discover this amazing country and hit the road. But he only got to the Urals. And he did not dare to go further.
Later, Aristey composed a poem about this, in which he painted his route. First you need to swim across the Black Sea, then cross the Urals, and on the shore of the Extreme Sea, where the night lasts six months, the traveler will be greeted by the mysterious Hyperborea. Despite the rather clear description, the coordinates are vague. And for the next several centuries they frantically searched for Hyperborea.

The North keeps a secret
The ancient Greeks admired Hyperborea. But the ancient Romans, and later the Byzantines, were afraid of this word. In their eyes, the Hyperboreans ceased to be enlightened beings who can fly through the air and live forever, and became cruel barbarians who came from the North and pulled apart the once mighty Roman Empire. Hyperborea turned into a country of severe cold and harsh morals. When in 860 the princely Slavic squads besieged Constantinople, Patriarch Photius complained about the "people of the north": "Where did this terrible Hyperborean thunderstorm come from?" Since then, Hyperborea has become associated with Russia and the Slavs for many centuries.
Especially the parallel Russia - Hyperborea strengthened at the end of the 15th century. Two events coincided: on the one hand, the scientific work of the antique historian of the II century Claudius Ptolemy "Geography" was taken out of the captured by the Turks of Constantinople. In it, the historian placed Hyperborea in the north of Eurasia. And the second factor was the liberation of Rus from the Tatar yoke at the end of the 15th century. When in Europe, as if out of nowhere, a new large state - Muscovy - appeared, everyone decided that these were Hyperboreans. In 1507, a map was even issued on which Hyperborea was. But when the Europeans began to visit Muscovy more often, they saw the same people - without super-technologies and magic. Then there was a version that Hyperborea lies somewhere to the north.
Years of unsuccessful searches
Over the past centuries, Hyperborea has repeatedly changed its registration. She was placed in the Arctic, transferred to the territory of Norway and even tried to find it on the Lomonosov ridge.
The Nazis from the "Ahnenerbe" organization were convinced that Hyperborea and the island of Thule, where the gods live, are one and the same place. They tried to find their Hyperborea in Finland and Iceland. However, to no avail.
The last expeditions of lovers of the unknown "discovered" Hyperborea in the region of the Kola Peninsula. They began to find strange artifacts there. Giant stone sculptures laid out in the form of a map of the starry sky. Rocks, in which some scientists have seen giant man-made figures. It all began in 1921, when the Soviet scientist Alexander Barchenko claimed that he had discovered a lost civilization on the Kola Peninsula, which could be the progenitor of all modern humanity. He described ancient buildings that resemble pyramids and giant granite steles. But the following expeditions did not find anything similar, and the scientist was ridiculed. Although his memoirs are still classified.
They began to study the Kola Peninsula again in the mid-90s. Then enthusiasts, in particular the researcher Valery Demin, suggested that the legendary Hyperborea was destroyed by a cataclysm. Ancient people began to settle from the Kola Peninsula to Europe, and some of them built underground cities, where they took all their high technologies. None of these theories are supported by official science and are considered either a fairy tale or falsification. But in the world there are still thousands of people who believe that somewhere in the north of Russia ancient Hyperborea, the ancestral home of the Slavs and all mankind, keeps its secrets.
