Plato about Atlantis - the first mention of the disappeared mainland
The legend of Atlantis was presented in two dialogues - Timaeus and Critias, authored by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato [427-347 BC. e]. They tell how Plato learned about Atlantis.
The Athenian politician Critias, in a conversation with Socrates about an ideal state, reveals to him an amazing story, which he learned from his grandfather, he from Solon, who was one of the seven wise men of Ancient Greece. Solon, in turn, learned the secret of Atlantis from the Egyptian priests.
Cretius's story begins with the war of Athens with Atlantis, which, according to the narrator, took place about 9500 years ago [for us - about 11,500 years ago]. At that time, the Athenian state and Atlantis were the most powerful powers and main rivals. Not inferior to Athens in military power, Atlantis occupied a vast territory. She was subject to the lands of northern Africa and Asia Minor, which gave the Atlanteans significant resources.
Atlanteans enslaved many peoples and, not wanting to stop their aggressive campaigns, turned against Athens. Then the Athenian people rose to defend their homeland. Abandoned by the allies, the Athenian army, thanks to the courage of its soldiers, not only won a victory over the Atlanteans, but also liberated the lands they had conquered, restoring independence to the local peoples. However, a terrible catastrophe soon occurred: in just one day, the once mighty Atlantis sank under water. Together with her, the Athenian army also died - the elements did not spare anyone.

Atlantis, according to this legend, originates from the ten sons of Poseidon, the god of the seas and oceans, whom their mortal girl Kleito gave birth to.
