The stories of Fafnir can be found in the Icelandic Wolgung saga. Like many other Norse myths, she describes the adventures of the gods, wonderful magical treasures and curious shape-shifting creatures with unusual powers. In Norse mythology, dwarfs play a very important role, and these creatures can be good or evil.
Hreidmar, who was the king of the dwarves, had three sons. Fafnir was the eldest and he was gifted with a fearless soul and a powerful hand. The second son, Otter, could change shape, and then there was Regin, who built a golden house to please his father.
Fafnir's description is quite interesting. According to the Norse saga, no one dared to approach Fafnir due to his cruel gaze and helmet. His fearsome appearance was one of the reasons he guarded his father's golden house.
One day something terrible happened. The three gods Odin, Hoenir and Loki walked along the stream to Midgard, one of the mysterious nine worlds of Yggdrasil, the sacred tree of life in Norse mythology.

The three gods continued their journey until they arrived at the house of Hreidmar, whom they asked for shelter for the night. At first, Hreidmar was friendly enough, but when he saw the otter, he cried out in rage and sadness, because the dead creature was his son. Hreidmar summoned two other sons, Regin and Fafnir. Then, with magic spells, he disarmed the gods and bound them.
In Norse mythology, Andvaranaut is a powerful magic ring capable of producing gold. It was created by the dwarf Andvari, who could turn into a fish at will.
God Odin told Hreidmar that he and his companions would pay the ransom he asked. Hreidmar and his sons demanded that the otter's skin be stuffed with gold treasures. Loki, who was the most cunning of the gods, headed straight to where he killed the otter and looked down into the water. Soon he saw what he was looking for, a huge pike guarding the entrance to an underwater cave that gleamed with gold. The pike was the dwarf Andvari, the keeper of the legendary treasure - the magic ring of Andvaranaut.
To save his life, the dwarf Andvari gave up all his gold. He begged Loki not to take the Ring of Andvaranaut, but Loki grabbed the ring and put it on his finger. Andvari put a terrible curse on the ring, vowing that anyone who wears it would be stricken with disease and death.
Hreidmar and his sons were delighted to receive so many gold treasures. Otra's ransom was paid and the three travelers were released, but very soon Andvari's curse began to work.
Fafnir decided that he wanted all the treasures and did not want to share the gold with his father and brother. So he killed his father, and when Regin came to claim a share, he scornfully banished him and offered him to earn his living.
Fafnir was now so greedy that he decided that he must guard his treasures day and night. The dwarf went into the desert to preserve his fortune, eventually turning into a dragon, and he breathed poison into the ground around him so that no one would approach him and his treasure, causing terror in the hearts of people.
But his brother Regin was determined to take revenge, and he sent his adopted son Sigurd to kill the dragon. So the greedy fanfnir dwarf died and the curse was proven effective once again. It is best to stay away from the magic ring of Andvaranaut no matter how beautiful and priceless it is.
