Members of the British Heritage State Commission reported the discovery of one of the first ever photographs of Stonehenge. The photo, according to The Daily Mail, was taken one hundred and forty-four years ago - in 1875.
The famous stone megalithic structure was taken over by the UK from private hands a hundred years ago. In order to celebrate the anniversary of this significant event, the British Heritage State Commission organized an action - the British were invited to share photos of Stonehenge from family archives.
Among the thousands of pictures, truly unique ones were discovered. The oldest photo was a photo shared by the Routh family. The image shows a group of people having a picnic next to an ancient structure. Now you will not be able to do something like that - picnics at Stonehenge are prohibited.
In another picture taken at about the same time, you can find a carriage with smartly dressed young people, "parked" at Stonehenge. Probably, this was a rather fashionable way of taking pictures at that time. British experts believe that the inhabitants of Foggy Albion may have other photos of Stonehenge taken at the very dawn of photography.
