The number 12 represents the 12 hierarchies of ancient scripture, which in turn define the 12 constellations of the zodiac.
Sumerian priests and astronomers were the first to divide the year into smaller parts. Since their lunar year had only twelve months, in which there were practically 30 days each, their day consisted of twelve units, the so-called dannas.

As evidenced by the results of numerous excavations, the solar year, consisting of 360 days, 12 months of 30 days each, has been used since 2400 BC. This is recorded in the Babylonian calendar, but it was not until the time of King Hammurabi (1955-1913 BC) that uniformity was introduced in the calendar, and the months were given names that are used today in the Hebrew, Syrian, and Lebanese calendars.
The ancient Egyptians divided the day into day and night, which consisted of the same number of hours. The former were associated with the goddesses who brought the disk of the Sun to the sky, and the latter with the goddesses who brought the star.
