A British resident Katherine Quick (Katherine Quick) 14 years after the funeral of her grandmother found out that the remains were buried in the wrong grave. This is reported by the Metro.
Her grandmother, 82-year-old Marion Jarvis, died of cancer in 2003. Quick and her mother asked to bury a relative in a crypt, along with her grandparents who died in the 1930s, at a cemetery in Penarth, South Wales. Their grave was not marked in any way, but the cemetery management assured Quick that they had raised the old plans, found the crypt and buried the deceased in the right place. Jarvis's granddaughter and mother installed a tombstone with the names of all relatives and regularly brought flowers to it.
In December 2016, Quick found out that her unborn daughter had a rare genetic disease, due to which there is a high chance of stillbirth or imminent fetal death after childbirth. She had an abortion and wished to bury the remains of the child with her grandmother. A week later, the woman received a call from the funeral agency and said that she was buried elsewhere, a row from the desired grave. The management of the company and the municipality have apologized to the British woman.
Only a few months later, the relatives managed to correct the confusion, reburial the late Jarvis and place the remains of an unborn child in the same crypt. The family did not arrange a farewell ceremony, as they were “emotionally drained”: “I not only grieved over the loss of my daughter, but also faced all this confusion. I was so ashamed in front of my grandmother. The family also had to pay for the destruction of the gravestone in order to extract the remains of the grandmother.
The representative of the city municipality noted that he could not comment on what had happened in any way, since all the people who worked at the time of Jarvis's funeral had long since changed their place of work. He added that all possible assistance was provided to the family.
