Now Petrozavodsk residents are unlucky: scientists promise a lunar eclipse, and the weather does not allow seeing this rare sight. But our ancestors in the 19th century were more fortunate - they watched it.
For example, in 1877, on the night of August 11-12, from half past eleven in the night, with a completely clear sky, the moon began to gradually decrease, and then completely disappeared. The total eclipse lasted almost two and a half hours.
The following year, a total lunar eclipse took place in January. It began at about 12 o'clock at night and lasted an hour and a half.
Petrozavodsk residents also observed other phenomena, moreover, rather strange ones. In July 1889, after seven in the evening, four rainbows simultaneously flashed over the city against the backdrop of rare rain and sunlight. Moreover, each pair of rainbows walked in a concentrated manner, but had its own special center. Crossed among themselves, these pairs formed a semblance of St. Andrew's cross. The unusual phenomenon lasted almost five minutes.
And in 1897, in February, at about 12 noon, a ball appeared from the northeastern side from behind the clouds, the diameter of which "was equal to the diameter of a large plate." The ball was greenish blue and emitted bright rays. Having described a small arc in the sky, he disappeared into the clouds. The phenomenon lasted five seconds. Maybe it was a UFO?
