The myth of non-regenerating nerve cells, widespread among the inhabitants, is very firmly rooted in the heads of people, so scientists have to carry out new research to prove the opposite. New neurons, as scientists from the United States have found, are quite actively formed even in old age.

“The neurons formed in old age work somewhat worse than those formed in childhood, but this is quite natural. The main thing is that neurogenesis does occur throughout life,”says the study's lead author, Maura Boldrini of Columbia University.

A study of the brain tissue of deceased people, carried out by American scientists under the leadership of Boldrini, showed that an elderly body is capable of producing new nerve cells.

“This is also confirmed by experiments carried out on laboratory rodents. Now, in issues related to neurogenesis, there are several contradictions at once, that is, we managed to prove one hundred percent that new neurons are formed throughout life. However, if we talk about their quality, then there is certainly a certain difference,”adds Boldrini.
