Scientists at the University of British Columbia have found that athletes are vulnerable to cardiovascular disease despite constant physical activity. This confirms the results of previous studies, according to which people who are exposed to constant stress increase the risk of premature death. This was reported in the MedicalXpress press release.
Experts analyzed data on 798 athletes aged 35 and older who engaged in moderate to high physical activity three days a week at least. Volunteers answered a series of questions about health, family medical history, and sports. Participants also had their blood pressure measured and had coronary angiography.
As a result, 94 people showed signs of cardiovascular disease, and 10 - severe dysfunctions of the coronary artery without symptoms.
While physical activity has been shown to help prevent heart disease, cancer, and depression, excessive exercise can cause serious health problems. Scientists advise to consult a doctor regularly.
