British archaeologists have voiced the most likely reason for the transfer of the famous megalithic site of Stonehenge, which, it is assumed, was originally located not in Wiltshire, where it is today, but in Wales. The material in which archaeologists talk about the reasons for the hypothetical transfer of a large-scale stone structure appeared on the pages of The Telegraph.
The main reason for the transfer of Stonehenge, according to University College London, archaeologist Mike Parker-Pearson, was cultural considerations. The monument was the embodiment of departed ancestors for the ancient Welsh, present in the physical world, so they, during the change of location, had to transport it with them.
Originally located on the territory of modern Wales, Stonehenge was a kind of tombstone at the site of a mass grave and was used for ritual purposes. The Welsh, faced with the need to move, did not bother the ashes of their ancestors, but decided to move the huge stones.
Scientists recently conducted an experiment in which they tested a likely way to move massive stones and confirmed its possibility.
