Iceland's huge glacier Vatnajokull - the second largest in Europe - suddenly began to melt like ice cream in summer: huge holes with a diameter of up to a thousand meters appeared on it.
Scientists say that the reason for this may be the global climate change of our planet, the pole shift, as well as the increased seismic and volcanic activity on the territory of this island state. It turns out that the land, lying under the age-old ice, has been revealed for the first time in many thousands of years, that is, since this massive ice cover was formed.
The researchers believe that the melting of the glacier was greatly influenced by the Eyjafjallajekul volcano, which in 2010 brought a lot of unrest and inconvenience to both the inhabitants of Iceland and Europe in general. However, this monster can wake up the even more powerful Katla volcano, which has been dormant since 1955. In general, all these processes - the increased activity of thirty active volcanoes, as well as bursts of volcanic activity this summer and led to the fact that the Vatnajokul glacier began to turn into a kind of spongy ice.
How is Iceland threatened by the melting of this glacier? A certain ecological disaster, of course, is knocking on the door, especially the inhabitants of the island state are worried about possible floods, however, climate change itself can create considerable problems.
