Semigallian sanctuary
The fact that this territory is unique became known in 1996.
Riga researcher and historian Ivar Vicks told reporters about the mysterious properties of local stones and unusual meteorological phenomena. After a short time, the researcher died from a rapidly progressing oncological disease. Viks's work was continued by Evgeny Sidorov, also a Latvian scientist, radioelectronic physicist.
It is no secret that the Pokain Forest is a pilgrimage site for many people who consider it endowed with healing powers. Enthusiasts have paved paths between the stones here, and some of the boulders have even been given names. Indeed, this place is extraordinary and mysterious. There are exactly thirty hills in the Pokain forest. For some reason, foliage on oak trees grows only on one side. However, the stones here are most striking.
It is unknown where these massive boulders came from. There is, however, a hypothesis that in the old days pilgrims came here from afar, who left stones symbolizing liberation from sins. They also say that one of the hills conceals either a radioactive meteorite, or an ancient burial place, or perhaps a pagan sanctuary of the Semigallians (as one of the Baltic peoples was called). You can also hear that in these places once gathered thirty priests-druids - and, mind you, each on "his" hill - and controlled the weather.

The old-timers especially tell a lot about the hill called Ziggurat - possibly man-made, which was once hollow. It could be a kind of dolmen - a sanctuary of the ancient era of the megaliths, a portal designed for hermits and priests to go to another world.
There are legends that the ancient Semigallians could foresee and partially change the future. With the help of special rituals, they became invisible for a while and took women and children out of the settlements besieged by the enemy.
This Grail not made by hands
Ivar Vix himself had no doubt that all thirty hills of the Pokain Forest are artificial, and the masonry scattered here are parts of a complex system, the purpose of which is to create the effect of energy resonance. The researcher argued that the local mushrooms are of fantastic size, and the oak crowns seem to be twisted into a spiral by some force. Weeks even ventured to suggest that the legendary Holy Grail has an intangible nature and is a stream of the purest cosmic energy that easily spills into the bowl of the local forest.
A separate mystery is local temperature anomalies. How can one explain, for example, the fact that many boulders remain warm in any weather? The stones have healing properties: some heal diseases of the joints, others - osteochondrosis, and still others - any female ailments. However, not everything is so simple, there are some among them that pose a danger to humans. Sometimes, succumbing to temptation, tourists took the stone they liked as a souvenir, but soon they bitterly regretted their frivolity, becoming a victim of an illness or an accident.
Be that as it may, but after visiting the Pokain Forest, even the most notorious skeptics began to believe in the supernatural power of the local nature.
Sentient glowing balls
There is a special place in the forest called the Valley of the Spirits, although people do not meet ghosts there. It's all about the extraordinary luminous balls, which are invisible to the naked eye even for professional ufologists, but are clearly captured and appear in photographs. In the Latvian UFOIats Center for the Study of Anomalous Phenomena, this phenomenon was conventionally called spherical objects of unknown genesis (SHONG). A member of this center, Yevgeny Sidorov, for example, does not exclude that the luminous balls are of a psychoactive nature, they say, they are endowed with a mysterious mind. This is also confirmed by contactees, yogis, psychics and so on who have visited this zone, who, with the help of meditative exercises, sometimes "summoned" UFOs, and sometimes recorded anomalies in the forest with the help of equipment. This also supports the intelligent nature of objects.
American researcher Jim Hurtok said that already in the mid-seventies of the last century, some NASA satellites, from those that tracked the military activity of the Soviet Union, recorded a powerful source of underground radiation on Latvian territory. The anomaly had a diameter of approximately 340 kilometers, its center was in the vicinity of the city of Dobele. The Americans mistakenly believed that they had "detected" the radiation of a certain reliably classified military facility in the USSR, which was based in the Pokain forest. This version, however, was not confirmed.
