Jan-Willem van Prooyen, a professor of social and organizational psychology at the Free University of Amsterdam, said that at the beginning of the study, it came as a surprise to him that so many people believe in conspiracy theories.

In one experiment, the researchers asked one group of subjects to describe life moments in which they feel they are in control. A second group of volunteers was asked, on the contrary, to describe situations in which they feel helpless.
After that, scientists asked the participants' opinion on the conspiracy theory widespread at that time in Holland connected with a government conspiracy to conceal important moments in the country's development. The first group turned out to be less inclined to believe that the government was really up to something bad.
“We saw that when you give people a sense of control, they are less likely to believe in conspiracy theories. The feeling of control makes people less suspicious of government actions,”the researcher notes.
By the way, a recent poll in the United States showed that about 40% of Americans are firmly convinced that a cure for cancer has already been invented, but this is hidden from the general public so that pharmaceutical companies do not lose revenue. Another opinion says that the cure for cancer exists exclusively for the elite of mankind - supposedly, it works to limit the overpopulation of the Earth.
“People have a natural tendency to be suspicious of those organized groups that have power and powerful influence over society, and their actions can be potentially hostile,” notes van Prooyen.
Psychologists call the social and psychological needs of a person the source of the feeding theory carried by adherents of conspiracy theories to society. At the same time, such a fact as the social inequality of a person in society is also important - this is another reason for the emergence and maintenance of conspiracy theories about world conspiracies.
An interesting thing is noted by psychologists, for example, a person who once accepted this or that conspiracy theory for loyalty, later it will be extremely difficult to convince him of the erroneousness of his opinion - indisputable facts will be literally perceived with hostility. Moreover, all evidence contradicting the theory will be discarded and rejected, which is a typical technique in conspiracy theories.
The next option for defending the veracity of a theory is to interpret the evidence in such a way that, from conflicting facts, it will miraculously defend the conspiracy theory as hard evidence, even if logic and rationality suffers from it.
Very often in conspiracy therapies, it happens that any fact, even uninformative and seemingly not having a weak relation to the case, suddenly having received little effort, not only successfully fits into the scenario of events proposed by the conspiracy theory, but even forms the basis of any crazy idea.
