Alcatraz is considered one of the most overprotected prisons where dangerous criminals were kept. The fort was used as a prison for 29 years, they tried to escape from there 14 times, but not a single escape, according to official figures, was successful. Someone was shot, someone was caught, only three prisoners could not be found: Frank Morris and two Anglin brothers. The FBI suspects they drowned in the bay.
However, a letter has recently been published from one of the brothers - John Anglin. He wants to go back to jail because he is sick. If the FBI provides him with free assistance, the criminal will announce his location.
“My name is John Anglin. I fled Alcatraz in June 1962 with my brother Clarence and Frank Morris. I am 83 years old and in bad shape. I have cancer. And yes, we did it that night, but with great difficulty! - writes Anglin.

In the letter, the offender said that he lived for a long time in Seattle, and then in North Dakota. Now he lives in California. And he is ready to go back to jail, but with certain conditions: only for a year and if he receives the necessary treatment. He asks the police to announce their decision on television. He also said that Morris passed away in 2008, and his brother - three years later.
The FBI has reopened the case, which is almost half a century old. They examined the fingerprints, handwriting and DNA of the author of the letter, but the results were too mixed.
Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers, who were serving time for a bank robbery, chose the most sophisticated way to escape from Alcatraz. For several months they prepared their plan. The criminals stole an engine from a broken vacuum cleaner and built a drill, instead of a drill they used a regular sharpened spoon. The fugitives made a hole in the wall of the cell, through which they made their way into the service tunnel, and then onto the roof.

If the author of the letter is indeed John Anglin, then this is the only successful escape from Alcatraz.
