Archaeologists have found at the first Pyatnitsky excavation site in the town of Staraya Russa, Novgorod region, a mysterious burial of horses of the 13th century, the head of the excavation site Elena Toropova told RIA Novosti on Tuesday

“In the cultural layers of the second half of the 13th century, during the field season of 2008, we found the skulls of 14 horses and other bones of these animals,” said Toropova.

According to the scientist, there is no version yet that would explain this unusual find.

“These are not the consequences of the pestilence, since the horses were buried here for about 80 years, it does not look like a slaughter or ritual actions. In a word, it takes time to find an explanation for this find,”said Toropova.

According to the head of the excavation, the remains of the discovered animals will be studied by a paleozoologist.

Research at the first Pyatnitsky excavation site in Staraya Russa, which began in late June, has now been completed. During the excavations, scientists have found about 1000 antiques.

Of all the finds of the current field season, experts single out a 17-centimeter 200-gram silver hryvnia, which became the first for old Russian archaeologists. Such silver bars were used in the Middle Ages for large transactions.
