In the Republic of Malawi, East Africa, an angry mob has killed at least six people. The bloody showdown began in mid-September, when rumors spread that some vampires were killing people and sucking blood out of them.

Volunteer groups of the so-called "vampire hunters" quickly formed in the country, which in fact are ordinary vigilantes. They attack anyone who is suspected of being vampiric and beat or kill these people.

Hysteria over vampires and fear of falling prey to these "hunters" reached such a point of tension that the United Nations (UN) began to rush to evacuate its employees from the country. At the same time, it is noted that the vigilantes tried to block the escape routes of UN employees and guarded them on the roads.

Until now, the true reason for the onset of vampire hysteria remains unclear. Rumors of ghoul attacks supposedly came from neighboring Mozambique and quickly spread among Malawi villagers who believe in ghosts, spirits and vampires. The Republic of Malawi is located in eastern Africa and borders Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania.

Most of all, hysteria affected the areas of Phalombe and Mulanier, there are many poor rural populations, among whom superstition, the supernatural and belief in witchcraft are widespread. In 2002, there was already a similar wave of violence associated with rumors of vampires.

Malawi President Peter Mutarika expressed serious concern about the current situation.
