His full name is Jose Pedro de Freitas, but he is known to the world under the pseudonym Arigo. How this poorly educated Brazilian made unmistakable diagnoses, wrote out competent prescriptions and performed the most complex surgical operations is still a mystery. Otherwise, as a miracle, you can not call it.

The beginning of the way
He was born in the small town of Congonhas do Campo in eastern Brazil on October 18, 1921, into a family of a farmer who was barely making ends meet. Due to poverty, Jose completed only four grades of primary school and began working in the mine. Later, he still saved up money for a small restaurant, but then something unexpected happened. Jose was already 30 years old when a strange melancholy began to overcome him, he was tormented by nightmares, and de Freitas began to talk in his sleep.
After suffering for two years, Jose turned to a well-known medium in the city, Señor Oliveira, who, "consulting with the spirits" at a spiritualistic seance, established that Jose's condition was not a disease, but a call, since some spirits were acting through him …
It is unlikely that this message somehow made de Freitas happy, but on one of his sleepless nights a certain spirit appeared to him, calling himself the shadow of the Austrian surgeon Adolf Fritz, who died during the First World War in Estonia. Allegedly, this spirit set a condition for Jose: either he will heal people using de Freitas's body, or the Brazilian will continue to get sick. The first miracle
Once a priest of the local Catholic Church was invited to a wealthy home to confess and unleash a dying woman. This routine procedure did not promise any surprises. Suddenly, one of those present (you guessed it, it was de Freitas) rushed out of the room, returning a moment later with a huge kitchen knife in his hands. Pushing the crowd aside and pushing aside the priest who was about to anoint the dying woman's forehead with oil, he threw the blanket off her. The next moment, he plunged the knife into the woman's lower abdomen with a swing and turned the blade several times in the wound.
In the resulting wound, he stuck his hand and pulled out a huge tumor the size of a grapefruit. It is noteworthy that the patient was conscious all this time, but did not utter a sound, and then said that the terrible pain that tormented her was gone. Everything happened so unexpectedly that no one had time to interfere with him, and the relatives who had come to their senses ran after the doctor. Upon examination, the doctor noticed that the edges of the terrible wound that de Freitas had made during the "operation" had already grown together. And the removed piece of tissue really turned out to be a malignant tumor.
This case was a turning point for de Freitas, who, as it turned out, did not remember at all how he cut out the tumor, because he was in a trance state. However, word of the miracle spread throughout the district. In a poor area, where it was completely impossible for many to receive qualified medical care, de Freitas turned out to be the last hope.
It is only known that from that time on, huge crowds of the afflicted besieged the modest housing of the newly-minted healer. It is noteworthy that Arigo operated only on those whom medicine considered hopeless. But it was with this that Arigo made himself a lot of ill-wishers. After all, the very fact that he used patients whom the doctors refused, but at the same time was not a doctor himself, turned out to be a reproach to traditional medicine.
Prosecutions
The authorities could not tolerate for a long time what they called "mockery of medicine." True, they could not accuse de Freitas of illegal labor activity - after all, he did not take money from his clients.
And then in 1968 a medical commission was created under the leadership of the famous American researcher of parapsychic phenomena, Dr. Andriy Puharich, which included 15 specialists in various fields.
All the diagnoses made by Arigo were recorded, the recommended drugs were tested, the treated patients were thoroughly examined. The conclusions of the commission were disappointing: they could not understand how he did it. The only thing that the commission determined for sure was that Arigo never made a mistake in any diagnosis, and all his operations ended in a complete recovery of patients. However, the phenomenon of the Brazilian healer itself has not received an explanation from the standpoint of science.
Having studied and recorded on film a series of amazing demonstrations, where Arigo, without any anesthesia and antiseptics, cuts out tumors with a simple knife, Puharich decided to try on himself such a fantastic gift of a "sleeping surgeon" (as people called a healer who fell asleep after the operation), asking them to remove them on his a benign neoplasm that worried him, which he did in his usual manner.
And yet, despite the fact that Arigo did not have a single case of complications, a criminal case was opened against him.
The reason was that Arigo was engaged in medical activities, without having a medical diploma. Even the intercession of Brazilian President Juscelino Kubitschek di Oliveira, whose daughter Arigo cured of cancer, did not help. However, even while behind bars, the healer continued to advise patients. And when this was reported in the press, a lot of letters began to come to the courts from people whom the "sleeping surgeon" had cured of various diseases.
However, the court regarded these testimonies as evidence for the prosecution, having attached them to the materials of the investigation. Heeler was sentenced to seven months in prison, but fortunately, President Kubitschek remembered the good and immediately announced a pardon for the "sleeping surgeon" known throughout the country. However, a few years later, a case was brought against Arigo again on the same charge. By that time, another president was already acting, and therefore there was no one to protect Arigo. As a result, the healer was sentenced to 16 months in prison.
Help from the other world
Every day, Arigo received several hundred patients, being in a state of complete detachment or trance, which, when he regained consciousness, did not remember at all. This is evidenced by the fact that when Arigo was shown a film about how he performed the operation, the healer was so shocked that he passed out.
Usually the healer needed just one glance to diagnose a person, after which he immediately took up a knife to perform an operation. Moreover, no anesthesia or sterility was required for this.
Healing itself often took place in a random setting. He used some patients in a rude and even cruel manner, that is, without saying a word, he pushed them against the wall and with a sweeping thrust the knife, which had been used to peel potatoes, into the sore spot.
From the outside it looked like a kind of sadistic nightmare. However, the patients did not feel pain or fear, although they were fully conscious. Having completed the operation, Arigo wiped the knife on the edge of his not always clean shirt and with his hands connected the edges of the wound, which healed in a matter of minutes.
It is noteworthy that Arigo did not operate on all of his patients. In some cases, he visually studied the patient for some time, named the diagnosis, and then wrote out a prescription or refused help, realizing that this person was hopeless. The medicines prescribed for them were well known to the doctors. But these drugs in most cases were outdated or in such combinations and dangerous doses that were never used in medicine. They also tried to reproach Arigo, despite the fact that the prescribed drugs have always helped his patients.
It was noted that in a trance state, Arigo speaks with a German accent and understands German well. However, in fact, the healer did not know this language. It turned out that an Austrian physician who died during the First World War named Adolf Fritz visited this world through Arigo and consulted the spirits of his Japanese and French colleagues. This turned out to be more than strange, if not to attract the theory of spiritualism, according to which Arigo was nothing more than a born medium, in whose physical body certain spirits from time to time "entered".
It was they who produced various kinds of paranormal phenomena, including extrasensory diagnostics of patients, their pain relief during surgery, as well as stopping postoperative bleeding and fantastically fast healing of the wounds received. Under these conditions, Arigo was only a tool in the hands of the afterlife, which, however, did not diminish his personal merits. Basically, because he could strain and refuse healing. However, believing that this ability was given to him by God, and being a deeply religious person, he decided to use it with the greatest benefit for others.
Arigo died in 1971, as he himself predicted. A bus packed with people overturned on a perfectly flat road. One Arigo died, and none of the passengers even had a scratch. Apparently, it was so necessary for the transcendental forces for the healer to be born, and then, having completed his mission, he left just as soon.
