A unique cave was accidentally discovered in Crimea about a month ago. During the construction of the Tavrida highway, workers uncovered a large karst cavity. Scientists were immediately summoned to the scene.
Cavers carried out a topographic survey of the cave, and it turned out to be the longest in the foothill Crimea: the length of the filmed passages is as much as 1015 meters!
As told in the Russian Union of Cavers, the cave was clearly created by pressure waters from below.
- Consists of several main galleries connected by labyrinth passages. Point and rift foci of feeding, ascending domes and wells were noted everywhere. One of these domes was opened during road works. The exposed entrance is a vertical well, with a total depth of 14 meters (from the base of the roadway to the level of the bottom of the main gallery), the researchers explained.
The cave is unique in many ways. Paleontologists are already working together with cavers. They found the bones of an adult mammoth and a baby mammoth, as well as a giant deer and a horned ram.
“There are gnaw marks on the bones, and claw marks on the walls of the den. Some of the bones are shattered in an atypical way for predators. In order to prove that this was done by a Paleolithic man, it is necessary to find primitive tools, - noted in the Russian Union of Cavers.
Work on the construction of the Tavrida highway was suspended for the duration of the research.
