In the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of the city of Alexandria (Egypt), archaeologists discovered the sunken palace of Cleopatra herself, which went under water many years ago.

Presumably, Cleopatra's palace was located on the island of Aphrodite, off the coast of Alexandria. It was from there, according to scientists, that the queen ruled Egypt. It is believed that the island sank from the tidal waves and multiple earthquakes that often happened in these places.

For example, researchers who study ancient manuscripts not so long ago found in medieval documents a mention of the fact that there was a strong earthquake in Alexandria in 335, due to which part of the coast went under water. Perhaps it was this earthquake that sank the island, where the palace of the legendary Cleopatra was located.

The study of the found city was carried out by an expedition of the European Institute of Marine Archeology, headed by its director Frank Goddio. Divers have found a huge number of artifacts that have been under water for over 1,500 years.

Nevertheless, many of them are perfectly preserved. Among the finds are Roman columns, ancient Egyptian sphinxes, many Greek sculptures, amphorae and bas-reliefs, objects of labor.

The most valuable were raised to the surface and exhibited in the Alexandria Museum. But the Egyptian government plans to create an underwater museum at Cleopatra's Palace, so most of the finds remain intact.
