A resident of the Yaroslavl region found an unusual 27-kilogram stone, which may be a fragment of a meteorite. The initial examination of the find, carried out at the Center for Diagnostics of Micro- and Nanostructures at the Yaroslavl State University, showed that it has signs of extraterrestrial origin.
“Our center has extensive experience working with geologists and biochemists who bring such finds. To be honest, at first I doubted that it was a meteorite, but our employees checked the stone and found a low chromium content in it - the first sign of the extraterrestrial origin of the stone, ” said Anatoly Churilov, an employee of the diagnostic center.
- The results of the analysis and the sample were sent to the St. Petersburg Institute of Precambrian Geology and Geochronology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Scientists, after checking the data and analyzing the relative composition of chemical elements in the stone, confirmed that with a very high probability it could indeed be a stone of meteoric origin. They intend to continue researching it."
According to an employee of the center, the size of the stone is impressive: about 30 cm. It is egg-shaped and slightly melted. In the Yaroslavl region, local residents rarely come across such finds. If scientists confirm its extraterrestrial origin, then the owner would like to name it Molozhsky meteorite - in memory of the place of its discovery and the city of Mologa, which was flooded in 1947 during the construction of the Rybinsk reservoir.
