Nowadays, most people imagine fairies as little men with butterfly wings and are usually friendly.
Most often, fairies can be found in Irish tales and legends, while they played a very important part in folklore and were both nature spirits and demon-like creatures.
Fairies can be tiny, or they can be the size of a child and meetings with them have been recorded for many centuries, going back to ancient times. The main meetings, of course, were with good-natured and lovely fairies. But there is a later layer of stories about very evil fairies. Maybe over time, the fairies got angry for something on humanity?
One of the very first stories about evil fairies was published in a 1911 book called The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries. The word “fairies” means all the little fairy people, consisting of fairies, elves, gnomes, etc.).
The author of the story published in this book, 73-year-old Neil Colton, said that he personally had a frightening and strange meeting with fairies and it happened during his youth in 1853. One fine summer day, Colton and his brother and cousin went to a local forest for berries.
Suddenly, the children heard inexplicable and enchanting music coming from the pile of stones. When they rounded the stones, they found themselves in a forest clearing, in the middle of which tiny and beautiful fairies were dancing. And suddenly one of the fairies, dressed in a red dress, flew towards the children and she looked very angry.

Having reached the children, this fairy, armed with some kind of stick, tried to hit Colton's cousin on the cheeks. The girl grabbed Colton by the arm, and then all three ran away in terror. But as soon as they ran out of the forest, Colton's cousin collapsed lifelessly to the ground.
The girl's father soon called the priest in a panic, and when he began to read prayers over the girl's body, she slowly stirred, as if she woke up, and then came to herself. According to the priest, only the fact that the girl grabbed her brother by the hand saved her from eternal captivity in the fairy world.
Another, earlier tale of evil fairies is dated 1757. British priest Edward Williams claimed that when he was a child, he was playing in the field with other children and suddenly they saw a bizarre procession in the grass of tiny people, just a few inches high.
There were eight pairs of men and they were dressed in red clothes. Each one carried a small piece of cloth in his hand, like a handkerchief. As soon as the children came closer, these creatures rushed at the children in a rage. According to the story, the children saw "their ancient, dark and gloomy face." At the same time, the little people shouted something in their incomprehensible language, as if cursing them. The children fortunately managed to escape from these little men.
In the 1800s, another story appeared, telling about the attack of a group of fabulous little creatures on a person. These creatures lived in a kind of "fairytale fortress" and attacked a person who accidentally entered their domain.
It is difficult to say exactly where this fortress is located now, in the area of the village of Lisdunvarna there are a lot of such “fairy hills”.
It is unlikely that the fairies became angry with people only in recent centuries, they were famous for the fact that they abducted human babies and left in their place the so-called changelings.
One of the stories closer to our time about an attempt to kidnap a child by fairies is dated 1844. After birth, the child slept in the same bed with his father and mother, the mother had one hand, but one day the mother woke up in the morning, and the child was not at hand.
Meetings with evil fairies sometimes happen these days. In 1972, American folk singer Artie Traum said that one day while walking in the forest he heard a chorus of strange voices that sang to him "Run, man, run!"
These voices were accompanied by an unusual melody and music, similar to the sound of violin and trumpets. The source of the sound was nowhere to be found, and all this seemed very strange to Traum. The man decided to retreat and go out of the forest, and when he walked back, something crashed behind him through the thickets with a crash and he saw a "big movement".
Simultaneously, Traum's head was attacked by a whole cacophony of loud sounds and he said that his head "was full of a thousand voices that spoke a thousand words without any meaning." Everything instantly disappeared as soon as Artie Traum left the forest.
The following story was published on a paranormal site and an eyewitness claimed that in the forests of Australia he met a creature, which the local aborigines call "Woodarjee". According to their description, these are mischievous creatures, similar to little people, but sometimes they can be very angry and cruel.
It happened in 1980 in the suburbs of Perth. The author of the story, along with his brother and cousins, played in the thickets. Suddenly the boy heard some rustling in the bushes and when he went there, he saw a very small man, no more than 13 inches (33 cm) tall. He looked like a typical Australian aborigine, only tiny and in his hands was a spear.
The boy did not even have time to really see this creature, as the man's face frowned and he with force threw a spear at the boy, which stuck in his leg. After that, the little man disappeared somewhere, and with him his spear and even the wound on the boy's leg suddenly disappeared, as if nothing had happened.
