According to media reports, a meteorite fall in the highlands of Peru, observed by many residents, provoked a disease with strange symptoms. According to eyewitnesses, a bright trail of fire in the sky and a powerful explosion during the fall made them initially assume that the plane had crashed.
The meteorite fell in the middle of the day local time on Saturday, September 15, 2007, in Peru, in the high-altitude department of Desaguadero in the province of Puno, located at Lake Titicaca near the border with Bolivia.
A crater 6 m deep and 30 m in diameter was formed at the site of the fall. A fountain of boiling water mixed with scale, slag and rocks came out of the funnel.
A "strange smell" spread over the area of the fall, which is noted by the victims. It caused headaches and vomiting. According to Adelaide Now, citing Peruvian radio station RPP, seven police officers investigating the area of the fall required oxygen pillows and urgent hospitalization.
