Archaeologists have unearthed ancient Roman coins at the former Teatro Cressoni in the city of Como, north of Milan. The treasure dates from around the 5th century AD. This was reported in a press release published on the website of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Cultural Activities and Tourism of Italy.
The treasures were found in the basement of a building inside a talcum powder urn. According to scientists, they date back to the times of the late Roman Empire, when it split into eastern and western parts and was attacked by barbarians. Minister Alberto Bonisoli clarified that the historical and cultural value of the find has not yet been established.
The coins were sent to the restoration laboratory, where specialists will study them. According to The Local, the value of the find could reach several million dollars.
The Teatro Cressoni, which opened in 1870 and closed in 1997, is located near the ruins of the Como Forum, the ancient Roman city's central square, where experts have previously found other historical artifacts.
