Not so long ago, egg freezing and storage was rarely used. Most often, this was a forced step dictated by illness or other exceptional circumstances.
Now everything has changed. Cryopreservation of oocytes is now even positioned as a measure against the decline in the birth rate. The popularization of this service is now largely based on women's fears and the intention to make it fashionable.
Freezing eggs, however, will never be as easy as freezing sperm. Although the first child born using frozen oocytes was conceived back in 1986, this is not as effective.
For successful freezing of oocytes, the fast freezing method, the so-called ICSI method, is used. It has less impact on the development of the embryo and is much more effective than previous slow freezing methods. It is also believed to improve the chances of fertilization, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicineissued, who provided the report.
It also helps to reduce adverse changes in the outer membrane of the oocyte caused by freezing. The egg freezing process is half the IVF cycle. It also includes several weeks of ovarian stimulation (injections of hormones to get many oocytes). After ovulation, oocytes are collected with a needle through the vaginal wall.
Costs for this range from $ 12,000 to over $ 20,000, plus drugs and annual storage costs. Since 2012, this procedure is no longer considered experimental. Freezing "just in case" is considered common today. It is also an alternative for some women trying to get pregnant.
