During road works in the Egyptian city of Luxor, Egyptian workers stumbled upon an underground Sphinx monument. This amazing discovery was announced by the head of the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, Muhammad Abdel Asis.
There is still little information about this find. Officials have only confirmed that the statue is below the top level of the ground, and that its appearance resembles the Great Sphinx of the Pyramids of Giza.
The experts on site say it will take a long time before we know more. The main point is that the excavation will not be carried out in a rush to prevent the possible destruction of the ancient statue.

Along with the three pyramids, the Great Sphinx, found on the Giza plateau - about 500 km from the site where the new statue was discovered - is one of the most characteristic and controversial remains of the ancient Egyptians.
Both the Sphinx's age, its mysterious shape, and the human head have been the subject of intense debate among experts for decades.

It is also worth noting that, like the find from Luxor, the Great Sphinx was also almost completely buried under the sand. It wasn't until 1817, when Giovanni Battista Cavilla made the first modern archaeological excavations, that the chest of the Sphinx was uncovered.
Unsurprisingly, the discovery of another sculpture of this type was also made underground.
By the way, it is really surprising that such an amazing find occurs just a few weeks after the discovery of an equally interesting black sarcophagus from Alexandria, which, by the way, was also discovered thanks to construction work.
