Collapse OS is a new open source operating system designed specifically for use in the darkest days of humanity.
According to Collapse OS, its creator, software developer Virgil Dupras, believes the global supply chain will collapse by 2030. With this possible future, humanity will no longer be able to mass-produce electronics, but it will still be a source of great political and social power. Anyone who can repair and reprogram electronics will have a huge advantage.
The Collapse operating system will work with 8-bit Z80 microprocessors. Although less common today than 16- and 32-bit, 8-bit Z80 microprocessors can be found almost everywhere - in desktops, cash registers, musical instruments, graphing calculators, and more. Dupras explains that the Z80 was chosen "because it has been in production for a long time and can be found anywhere."
According to him, Collapse OS should run on "minimally powerful home-made machines, have an interface through home-made input-output devices (keyboards, mice and monitors), edit text files, compile assembly source files for a wide range of microcontrollers and microprocessors, read and write to many different media and copy yourself."
