The problem of energy saving is becoming more acute every day. Ilyich's bulbs are being replaced by fluorescent bulbs, those, in turn, by LED ones. They become not only energy efficient, but also have a longer service life … It would seem - that's all, "live and rejoice", but the inventors do not stop!

Russian scientists from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and the Lebedev Physical Institute were able to develop a light bulb that is even more reliable, durable and high-intensity than those available and sold today. It is worth saying that they are trying to make similar ones both in the USA and in Japan, but they have not yet succeeded in obtaining samples similar to ours. Although work on its creation has been going on since about the 80s of the twentieth century.

Sheshin's lamp belongs to the so-called cathodoluminescent light sources. The work of such a light bulb resembles the work of picture tubes of "pot-bellied" televisions - in a vacuum between the cathode and the anode, a potential difference is created, and electrons from the cathode fly and hit the anode, causing the phosphor layer to glow.

It seems that everything is simple, but all previously developed samples had two main drawbacks - large dimensions and a long time of "heating" the cathode. There were also known autocathodes operating on the phenomenon of electron emission, when the cathode remains cold and the electrons move under the influence of an electric field. But to get an autocathode with a low cost of the final product … the task was impossible.

And “ours” were able to develop something similar

The autocathode of the Russian lamp is built on the basis of ordinary carbon, which does not act as a chemical element, but as a structure: creating a system from carbon fibers that produces a high emission current. The development is simple and cheap enough to manufacture. In addition, a power supply specially designed for the lamp is built into the lamp without increasing its size.

Scientists' calculations show that in mass production, the cost price, convenience and competitiveness of development are such that our cathodoluminescent bulbs are able to replace all mercury lamps and displace Chinese LED lamps from the market.

Few numbers

Data obtained in laboratory prototypes: luminous flux 250 lm, (like a 25 W incandescent lamp), power consumption 5.5 W (efficiency 40-60 lm / W, the possibility of upgrading to a luminous flux of 1000-1500 lm, with a lamp power of 25 Tue). The prime cost of laboratory samples is about 100-200 rubles. With mass production (from 1,000,000), it drops to 30–40 rubles. per piece
