Miracles, as you know, happen when you don't expect them at all and you already lose your last hope. Such a miracle just happened to a three-year-old girl who fell into the pool and spent almost 20 minutes under water
Doctors assured her parents that she had practically no chances to survive, but … the little girl got out safely and is now not inferior in her development to her peers.
The tragedy took place in September last year. Three-year-old Oluchi Nwaubani fell into the pool and lay at the bottom for 18 minutes before being pulled out. After that, the girl was taken to the hospital by helicopter, according to The Guardian.
According to doctors, the probability that Oluchi would survive was two percent out of a hundred. The human brain can do without oxygen for only 6 minutes, while the baby has been underwater three times longer.
For the next several days, Oluchi was connected to an artificial life support apparatus, as she could not breathe on her own. Doctors urged the girl's parents to turn off the device. They flatly refused, believing that the baby would definitely get out, and prayed for her.
And the miracle really happened. Oluchi regained consciousness and began to breathe on her own. But the doctors again began to assure the Nwabuani couple that it was too early to rejoice. The doctors were sure that the girl would remain disabled and would need constant care.
However, the experts were wrong this time too. Five months have passed, and now Oluchi is practically no different from her peers. She is a completely normal, active child: she runs, plays, however, she has slight problems with speech.
According to Mark Peters, a consultant at the hospital where the girl was lying, Oluchi was most likely helped by the low water temperature. “She suffered prolonged cardiac arrest, but the cold water lowered her body temperature, which probably increased the girl's chance of survival,” he says.
Surprisingly, Oluchi's case is far from the only one. So, last year, a 35-year-old architect from London was found lying in the river with no signs of life. The man did not breathe, and for an hour his pulse could not be felt. However, the drowned man still survived. Doctors believe that cold water played its role in the miraculous "resurrection" - its temperature was about 15 degrees.
