Scientists suspected that hallucinogenic mushrooms could be responsible for the death of the "witches" from Salem. According to experts, local residents may have consumed the plant identified in LSD.
According to historical records, as a result of the witch hunt in Salem, 20 people were burned alive. Moreover, there could have been more victims, since 34 girls were accused in the witchcraft case. It all started with the fact that a group of residents announced the attack of supernatural beings, incited on them by the inhabitants of Salem, allegedly practicing "devil magic".
In turn, scientists conducted a thorough study and found in the region a fungus called ergot, which could have affected the rye crop stored in Salem. For this, a sufficient condition was humidity, which was provided by local weather conditions. As a result of consuming ergot, people could experience symptoms such as pain and hallucinations. It should be noted that this particular mushroom lies in the composition of the drug LSD.
